Good Bye Mrs. Brett

Yesterday we had a special assembly to say goodbye to Mrs.  Brett.  It was wonderful hearing students from different classes talk about Mrs. Brett and how she has helped them.  Some of the classes even gave her advice for her new school.  Mrs. Sarchet's class made her special gloves.  We made an iMovie for Mrs. Brett.  It was hard to hear the movie in the gym so Mrs. Leech has put it on our class blog.  We wish Mrs. Brett good luck in her new school and on her new adventures.

Gingerbread Houses

On Thursday we made Gingerbread Houses.  We had a great time decorating our houses with royal icing and candy.  Thank you to all the parents who came to help.

Using Felt Board and Explain Everything

Today the students tried the app Felt Board and then when they were finished their pictures we moved the pictures into Explain Everything. By using the app Explain Everything they were able to draw, type and record their stories. They had a great time creating and recording stories. What is your favourite story telling app?

Using Draw and Tell for Math

We have been using ipads to communicate our learning in math.  The app Draw and Tell is a great app for primary students to show their learning.

Measuring

On Thursday we measured our gingerbread men.  We had a great time using the different manipulatives (cubes, tiles, blocks, cuisenaire rods, magnetic tiles) to measure the area, perimeter, width, and length of our gingerbread men.  We then wrote the measurements down in our math journals.

Where are Gingerbread Santa and Candy?

Last weekend Gingerbread Santa and Candy ran away from Sullivan and went to Pacific Heights. Then they ran away from Pacific Heights. We decided to use the app Draw and Tell to make missing posters for Gingerbread Santa. Today the Gingerbread Santa and Candy showed up at Mrs. Morrison's classroom. We are hoping that Gingerbread Santa and Candy will come back to our school soon!

Our Gingerbread Man is on the move!

Today we found out that Gingerbread Santa and Candy, from Mrs. Sarchet's class have travelled to Pacific Heights Elementary.  We are trying to figure out how they travelled to another school.  You can see them here.  We have sent a message to Pacific Heights to warn them that Candy and Gingerbread Santa are very sneaky and may try to escape.  Maybe they will travel to another school.  We are excited to see where they go next.

Yesterday we found out that Candy and Gingerbread Santa have their own blog now.  You can follow them on their blog at Gingerbread Adventures.

We hope that they will come back soon!

Our Gingerbread Santa Ran Away

On Friday, Gingerbread Santa came to our classroom. He listened to Mrs. Sarchet read a story on google hangout.
On Monday morning, we arrived at school to find a mess. There was brown paint on the desks and the floor. He had written words in the brown paint. There were 7 envelopes hidden all around the classroom. We found the envelopes and opened them. There were clues inside. Then we formed groups of 2 or 3 students to search for our friend, Gingerbread Santa. Some of us went to the gym, some to the library, the office, our big buddies, grade 2 and room 203. We searched high and low but we didn't find Gingerbread Santa. Where do you think that he went? We made traps to catch him if he comes back to the classroom. Here is a video of our morning. We hope to find our gingerbread friend soon!

Draw and Tell App

This week we purchased another app for our school ipads.  We now have Draw and Tell HD.  This is a great app for primary students.  It is very easy to use and the students are able to draw and tell about their picture independently.  Here is one of our Draw and Tell stories on patterns.

Google Hangout

Yesterday we had a Google Hangout with Mrs. Sarchet's class and three other grade one classes.  We listened to Mrs. Sarchet read the story The Gingerbread Boy  by Paul Galdone.  We really enjoyed listening to and watching Mrs. Sarchet read on the big screen.  We were sad when the fox ate the gingerbread boy.

We are now going to read other versions of the story.  What is your favourite version?

Numeracy Centres

We have been working on building up our numeracy skills.  This week we have been doing different numeracy activities.

Race to the top using dice.

Writing and solving equations on the SMARTboard.

Practising the 100 chart.

Building a tower using 31 yellow cubes.  He figured out that the tower will be high so he has built a side to balance the tower.

We love to print numbers.

We love the Bursting Bubbles game.

Sequencing numbers on the SMARTboard.

Making Bread

Yesterday we used a bread maker and made bread.  Ms. Leech borrowed the bread maker from Mrs. Sarchet as well as the recipe and we measured out the needed ingredients.  Ms.  Leech had never made bread before and she wasn't sure that it was going to turn out but it did.  The classroom smelled wonderful all day and we could hardly wait to try the bread.  Ms.  Leech says that we will make it again because it was so much fun.  Next time we will try a different bread recipe.

Measuring the water.

Adding 2 teaspoons of water.

Measuring and adding the butter.

Measuring the salt.  First we observed the differences between salt and sugar.

Adding the flour.

Adding the sugar.

Adding the yeast.

We kept checking the bread to see what was happening to it inside the bread maker.
It smelled so good.
Our bread is finally finished baking.

The bread was delicious.

We love the bread!

What we want to learn

Today I asked the students to write about what they want to learn this year.  They had a great time writing down their interests.  Here are some of their ideas:
I want to learn about bats.  I want to learn about making science experiments.

I want to learn about teeth (how to take care of teeth, how teeth grow ).  I want to learn about sunsets (how they go down)

I want to learn about pie.  I want to learn about how lego is made.

I want to learn about animals, know more math, and learn about plants and flowers.

Family Reading

Every Tuesday and Thursday parents and other family members are invited into the classroom to read with their child or a group of children.  It is a great opportunity to see the classroom and to listen to reading and to read.

What do we know about spiders?

We have been learning about Spiders. Tell us what you know about spiders.

Peace Wallwisher

We learned about making a wallwisher from Mrs. Wideen, one of our primary blogging buddies. For our Global Read Aloud, Mrs. Wideen created a wallwisher about what we liked about Charlotte's Web. We loved writing on the Charlotte's Web wall so we made our own wall about peace for Remembrance Day. We read the Peace Book by Todd Parr and then brainstormed ideas about what peace means to us. Then we wrote our ideas down in our writing books and some of us wrote our ideas on the wallwisher.

Pearl

Pearl, the hamster, came for a visit one morning and the students had a great time watching her move around in her cage.  They were so excited to see Pearl.  One of the students videotaped the other students observing Pearl and then Ms. Leech made an imovie with the video clips.

Halloween

For Halloween this year the primary classes participated all morning in fun stations.  They made witch feet, fruit salad, played bingo, made pictures on the iPads, listened to stories and made bookmarks.  Then in the afternoon, we had a costume parade and danced to the Monster Mash.  We had a great day.  Some of us wore our costumes all day and some changed into their costumes at lunch. By the afternoon everyone in the school was wearing a costume.  It was a great day!

Reading to Self

We like to read to ourselves after lunch.  Yesterday we tried something new and read out in the hall.  Ms. Leech went around and videotaped us reading.  Then today we read in the classroom again.  We can read anywhere as long as we read to ourselves.  There are 3 ways that we can read the book: read the pictures, read the words, and retell the story.

Learning Together

We like to work together to learn new things.  Sometimes we work in partners, sometimes in groups, and sometimes with our big buddies.

Can you guess what number we were learning about?

Numbers, numbers, numbers... we have been learning how to correctly print the numerals as well as different ways to show the numbers.  We have been exploring different ways to represent the various numbers and we have gotten quite creative by using manipulatives and the iPads.  Here is a video showing our creativity.  Can you guess the number?

Daily 5

In September we started learning about Daily 5.  We started with Read to Self, then Read to Someone, then Word Work and then Work on Writing.  We use a red chart and Ms. Leech picks the order that we do our activities in.  Some of us Work on Writing while some of us are reading or working with our sight words.  We are learning to be independent during these activities.  We are learning to focus and work while others are doing different things around us.  We can work on the carpet, at a table or on our desks.

Fall Leaves

Last week while on our daily run we decided that each time we ran a lap around the gravel field we would pick up a leaf.  When the run was over we counted the leaves to see how many laps each of us ran.  We then brought the leaves inside and measured them, compared them, described them, traced them and did leaf rubbings.
We had a great time observing and measuring the leaves.
